Junya Watanabe Black Zipper Collar Dress

Junya Watanabe Black Zipper Collar Dress

Resurrection is excited to offer a vintage Junya Watanabe black dress featuring an intricately constructed zipper collar. This striking Archive piece captures Watanabe’s distinctive approach to transforming utilitarian hardware into an integral part of the garment’s design. Cut in black fabric with a sleeveless, fitted silhouette, the dress features a softly draped collar that frames the neckline and is embellished with an elaborate series of antique-gold zipper teeth and hardware. The zipper detailing curves organically around the neckline, creating a sculptural focal point against the otherwise minimal black body. At the center front, the fabric gathers into a softly ruched point at the waist before falling into a gently flared knee-length skirt. The back continues the architectural construction with a structured collar, clean center seam, and an overlapping panel at the lower back. The hem is left subtly raw, adding to the intentionally unfinished quality of the design. The piece is particularly evocative of Junya Watanabe’s Spring/Summer 2005 collection, in which the designer incorporated zippers and snaps as prominent decorative elements rather than simply functional hardware. Vogue’s coverage of the collection specifically notes the use of “deeply encrusted gold zipper necklines,” while an auction record identifies a Junya Watanabe Spring/Summer 2005 Zipper dress with brass zips forming the collar. Watanabe’s broader practice of combining inventive pattern cutting with unexpected materials and utilitarian references is also well documented in museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. An exceptional Archive example of Junya Watanabe’s early-2000s experimentation, this dress demonstrates how familiar hardware can become the defining element of a sophisticated silhouette.
