Christian Dior Black Silk Chiffon Cocktail Dress by John Galliano (c. 2011)
Curator’s Note
This cocktail dress comes from John Galliano’s final year at Christian Dior, the house he had led since 1996. He left in March 2011, which makes the commercial pieces from that year among the last designed under his direction. This dress has fine pin-tucks that run vertically through the bodice and skirt. Three bands of chiffon are wrapped across the body and twisted into knots at the centre front, one at the bust and two at the waist. Galliano's signature row of self-covered buttons runs down one side. The sheer straps tie into bows at the shoulders, cross at the back and meet in a gathered keyhole.
