Comme des Garçons 1999SS Dot Overlay Top
Comme des Garçons' 1999SS collection, designed by Rei Kawakubo, reflected the designer's ongoing exploration of unconventional garment construction and the relationship between fabric, form, and the body. During the late 1990s, Kawakubo continued to challenge traditional definitions of clothing, experimenting with transparency, layering, and unexpected textile treatments to create garments that blurred the boundaries between fashion and art.
This sleeveless top features an intricate arrangement of overlapping circular appliqués, creating a distinctive three-dimensional surface. The geometric pattern extends across the garment, forming a textured structure that contrasts with the simplicity of its silhouette. A subtle gradient transitions from deep navy at the shoulders to a lighter, semi-transparent appearance towards the hem, emphasising the interplay between opacity and transparency. The combination of repetitive circular forms, delicate layering, and experimental textile construction captures Comme des Garçons' avant-garde approach to transforming ordinary garments into sculptural expressions.
